Non-Destructive Testing — Liquid Penetrant, Magnetic Particle and Ultrasonic Testing in Grande Vitória

Non-destructive testing on pressure vessels — Grande Vitória ES

Non-destructive testing (NDT) are inspection techniques that evaluate the integrity of components and structures without compromising their continued use. In the process industry, NDT is fundamental to ensuring the safety of boilers, pressure vessels, piping and steel structures subjected to pressure, temperature and corrosive agents.

ES Engenharia performs liquid penetrant (PT), magnetic particle (MT) and ultrasonic testing (UT) with inspectors qualified in accordance with ABNT NBR ISO 9712, meeting the requirements of NR-13, ASME Section VIII, AWS D1.1 and other applicable codes. Reports are issued with ART and integrated into the complete equipment dossier.

NDT Methods Applied by ES Engenharia

PT

Liquid Penetrant

An NDT method based on capillary action: the penetrant is applied to the surface, seeps into open discontinuities and is revealed by a powder developer. Detects cracks, porosity and laps in any non-porous material — metallic or non-metallic.

  • Structural and pressure welds
  • Cast and forged components
  • Pressure vessels and piping
  • Any non-porous material
MT

Magnetic Particle

A method based on magnetising the component: ferromagnetic particles in suspension accumulate in regions with a leakage field generated by surface and subsurface discontinuities, making them visible. Exclusive to ferromagnetic materials.

  • Boilers and pressure vessels
  • Carbon and low-alloy steels
  • Welds and heat-affected zones
  • Subsurface cracks up to ~3 mm
UT

Ultrasonic Testing

A method based on propagation of ultrasonic waves through the material: internal discontinuities and wall thickness variations are detected by signal reflection. Enables wall thickness measurement with equipment in service, without shutdown.

  • Hot thickness measurement (in-service)
  • Internal corrosion detection
  • Weld inspection (UT ToFD / Phased Array)
  • Plates, piping and vessels
NDT on industrial boiler per NR-13 Inspection of process equipment

Each NDT method has its specific application, determined by the design code, component material and type of discontinuity to be detected. ES Engenharia selects the most appropriate method after technical analysis, ensuring reliable defect detection and conformity with the acceptance criteria of applicable standards (ASME Section VIII, AWS D1.1, ABNT NBR 12177, among others).

All tests are performed by inspectors holding ABNT NBR ISO 9712 Level II certification, with written and traceable procedures. Technical reports are signed by a qualified engineer with ART registered at CREA-ES and integrated into the NR-13 equipment dossier, meeting the requirements for initial, periodic and extraordinary inspections.

Standards and Applications of Non-Destructive Testing

  • NR-13 — initial, periodic and extraordinary inspection of boilers, pressure vessels and piping
  • ASME Section VIII Div. 1 and 2 — pressure vessels manufactured and inspected per the American code
  • AWS D1.1 — weld inspection on structural steel
  • ABNT NBR 12177 — weld inspection on carbon steel piping
  • ABNT NBR ISO 9712 — qualification and certification of NDT inspectors
  • API 510 / API 570 — in-service inspection of pressure vessels and piping

Frequently Asked Questions

Which non-destructive testing methods are most used in industry? +

The three main NDT methods applied to pressure equipment are: Liquid Penetrant (PT) — detects surface cracks and porosity in any non-porous material; Magnetic Particle (MT) — detects surface and subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as carbon and low-alloy steels; Ultrasonic Testing (UT) — detects internal defects and measures wall thickness in welds, plates and piping. For NR-13 boilers and vessels, the choice of method follows the design code (ASME Section VIII, AWS, ABNT) and component accessibility.

When is NDT required by NR-13? +

NR-13 requires NDT in three situations: (1) initial inspection — before boilers and pressure vessels are put into service; (2) periodic inspection — at intervals defined by the standard according to equipment category; (3) extraordinary inspection — after repair, alteration or accident. The type of test required depends on the design code and recommendations of the qualified professional responsible for the equipment dossier.

Does NDT require equipment shutdown? +

It depends on the method. Ultrasonic wall thickness measurement can be performed with the equipment in operation (hot), without shutdown. Liquid penetrant and magnetic particle require access to the clean component surface — generally with the equipment cold and out of service. ES Engenharia evaluates each situation and plans the tests to minimize operational impact.

What qualifications do your inspectors hold? +

ES Engenharia's inspectors are qualified in accordance with ABNT NBR ISO 9712 — Level II in the applicable methods (PT, MT, UT). Technical reports are signed by a responsible engineer with ART registered at CREA. All documentation is traceable and compatible with the requirements of the NR-13 equipment dossier and INMETRO audits.

How do I request a non-destructive test? +

Contact us via WhatsApp at (27) 9.9798-8642. Provide: equipment type, material, location and urgency. We issue a technical proposal covering scope, applicable method, timeline and investment. For emergencies (unplanned shutdown), we prioritize same-day service in the Grande Vitória area.
